Students who have intellectual disabilities often prefer to have kinesthetic (hands on) learning opportunities:
PECS is a picture exchange communication system, that uses symbols for communication, reading, and can be a useful adaptation for any lesson. I have used this system in a workplace and classroom setting to assist people who have intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and also autism. PECS is easily adaptable to any behavior chart or daily schedule. A student who has a physical disability or autism may greatly benefit from having the opportunity to communicate using picture cards. http://www.pecsproducts.com/catalog/
